Start with all five colors.
Can't decide on one? Take a little of each. This set brings together five dyed colors: Hi (scarlet), Ikkonzome (pale pink), Usukō (pale clove), Kamenozoki (pale indigo) and Shirafuji-iro (pale wisteria). It is a good first step for beginners, and handy to keep nearby as a color sample.
The fabric is "tsumami chirimen," a thin silk crepe woven only for tsumami-zaiku (the Japanese craft of folding small squares of silk into petals). It appears in a Meiji-era book, and we recreated it with a weaver in Nagahama. Where an ordinary hitokoshi crepe weighs about 750 g per tan (one bolt), this one weighs about 520 g. A dye house in Kyoto stretches it to width and finishes it while keeping the crepe texture (shibo). It is 100% pure silk and an original of Oharibako.
- Each piece: about 35 cm (13.8 in) wide × 30 cm (11.8 in) long / 5 pieces, one per color
- 100% pure silk (fabric woven in Nagahama; light-weight hon-hitokoshi)
- This fabric is an original of Oharibako
- The fabric shrinks by about 10% when washed in water (mizutoshi). Please add the shrinkage allowance when deciding the size to cut.
Buying the same amount as cut-to-length pieces would cost 10,230 yen including tax. With the five-color set, you save 8%.
We will add more colors little by little. You will hear about the next dye batch first on our official LINE.
Colors may look different from the actual fabric depending on your screen. This set is the most reliable color sample.
Once you have decided on your colors, you can buy just the length you need as cut-to-length fabric. It is cut from 30 cm in 10 cm steps, as one continuous piece.
Looking for the fabric undyed? The same hitokoshi crepe before dyeing is available as Shirayuki chirimen (white fabric), cut to length. A full-bolt (tan) option is also available for larger projects.
