The "tsumami chirimen" of a hundred years ago, once more.
Around the end of the Meiji era, tsumami-zaiku books featured a fabric called "tsumami chirimen" (chirimen crepe for pinching). Tsumami Zaiku Shinan (Meiji 42, 1909) wrote that it was "woven in an extremely thin cloth," and Katei Nichiyo Fujo Hokan (Meiji 45, 1912) recorded that "the texture is likewise thin and hard to use for anything else." A thin crepe woven only for tsumami-zaiku. It is no longer woven today.
When it comes to hitokoshi (a type of chirimen crepe), it is Nagahama. With the full cooperation of a weaver there, we had a hitokoshi woven as thin as it can go. Where ordinary hitokoshi weighs about 750 g per tan (one bolt), this one weighs about 520 g.
The woven white fabric then goes to a Kyoto-zome (Kyoto dyeing) dye house. It is given a finishing treatment called habadashi (width adjustment) that keeps the shibo (crepe texture) from being flattened completely. Thin, yet with the shibo standing. That is why finer work is possible in tsumami-zaiku. It is perfect for works with an antique feel from the Meiji to Taisho eras.
To begin, five easy-to-use colors: four pale shades, Ikkonzome, Usukō, Kamenozoki and Shirafuji-iro, plus Hi (scarlet) as an accent color. These are colors you can use as they are for shichi-go-san hair ornaments.
- 100% pure silk (fabric made in Nagahama: light-weight hon-hitokoshi)
- Fabric width approx. 35 cm (slightly narrower than the approx. 38 cm of the white fabric, because of dyeing and finishing)
- Approx. 520 g per tan (ordinary hitokoshi is approx. 750 g)
- This fabric is original to Oharibako
- Although it has been given the width-adjusting finish, it shrinks by about 10% when wet.
- The dyed look varies slightly from lot to lot. When adding the same color later, buy a little extra
Sold by the length in 10 cm units. Quantity 1 = approx. 35 cm wide × 10 cm long. You can order from 30 cm (quantity 3). It is cut as one continuous piece.
We will add colors little by little. We will announce the next dyeing on our official LINE, so please add us as a friend!
If you cannot decide which color, start with the five-color set. It contains Hi, Ikkonzome, Usukō, Kamenozoki and Shirafuji-iro, each approx. 35 cm wide × 30 cm long, and makes the most reliable color sample.
If you are looking for undyed white fabric: the same hitokoshi before dyeing is available as Shirayuki Chirimen (white fabric), cut by the length. For bulk use there is also sold by the tan (full bolt).
