This is proof of becoming a young lady. The hakoseko is a carefully crafted accessory that samurai women in the Edo period never omitted from their formal attire. For Shichi-Go-San attire, which is a miniaturized version of an adult woman's formal wear, it is also a sign of taking a step closer to adulthood. Because it is such an important accessory that forms the core of the coordination, Oharibako has thoroughly focused on its tailoring.

The fabric is antique kimono fabric collected over many years. Each hakoseko has a different pattern, making it a one-of-a-kind item in the world. The stitching on the sides is "chidori-gake" (plover stitch), the same as for brides. It is a piece of handwork, stitch by stitch, with a cool openwork feel.

The small pouch that hangs down like a sachet has the meaning of a charm and actually prevents it from falling by being placed in the obi. Hanging from the kanzashi holder are decorative knots that ward off evil, and an odamaki tassel that elevates its prestige. The odamaki is an Oharibako original, a particular detail not seen in other hakoseko.
