This workshop is exclusively for students, where we will welcome Mr. Masaomi Nakagami from Nakagami Dyeing Shop, a long-established dye store in Kyoto, to teach us all about the techniques for dyeing tsumami zaiku fabric. We will use the same acid dyes as for hand-drawn Yuzen, with Mr. Kitai demonstrating and Mr. Nakagami providing explanations.
What you will learn on the day:
・Spot dyeing of square-cut fabric
・Yuzen gradation technique using a single-bristle brush
・Dyeing method that includes color fixing
The dyes used are liquid-type acid dyes developed by Mr. Nakagami for tsumami zaiku, which "do not need to be dissolved." No mixing is required, and 37 colors are already available. This greatly lowers the hurdle for spot dyeing and dyeing fabric scraps. After the workshop, Mr. Nakagami will hold a dye sale (330 yen per color, available for purchase on-site).
