Tokyo International Gift Show Spring 2020

7th LIFE×DESIGN Exhibition Announcement

Kitai Co., Ltd., which operates "Kyoto Oharibako,"

will be exhibiting at the Tokyo International Gift Show Spring 2020,

7th LIFE×DESIGN,

Aomi Exhibition Hall, A-01-10,

under the name "Atarashikimono Kyoto (Kyoto Fashion Promotion Committee)."

From boxes to people, and then to spaces.

Tsumami Zaiku is a traditional Japanese handicraft passed down from the Edo period,

said to have originated from ladies-in-waiting at the imperial court making handicrafts for amusement.

The small tsumami zaiku petals, made from scraps of the ladies' vibrant kimonos,

were not hair ornaments but rather decorations for "boxes."

Petals that adorned small boxes holding various tools for women.

These charming boxes must have been small interior items that made life enjoyable.

Later, as it spread among common women,

the decorative aspect of tsumami zaiku gained attention,

and it developed into a hair ornament.

From adorning boxes to adorning people,

during the Meiji and Taisho eras, it became a major boom among young women,

and became a popular fashion item,

symbolizing youthful women, such as for Shichi-Go-San and maiko in geisha districts.

We have long focused on the "decorative nature of tsumami zaiku"

and have wanted to develop tsumami zaiku, which evolved from adorning objects to adorning people,

into a new form that is more suited to modern times.

This form is the "KAZARI AKARI" we are announcing this time.

From boxes to people, and then to spaces.

Through light, we aim to adorn wider spaces with tsumami zaiku

and allow more people to enjoy it.

We propose a new decorative form of tsumami zaiku,

which has delighted women's hearts since the Edo period.

The faint light that permeates through Japanese paper and cloth

creates a ceramic-like texture amidst the shadows.

The characteristic of "KAZARI AKARI" is that it does not glow uniformly,

but has shadows within the light itself.

This was a challenge into a new genre,

and we went through repeated trials and errors.

Although there are still many immature aspects,

we hope that it will be enjoyed as an interior item and as decoration for shops and hotels.

Please come and see it in person at the Gift Show.

We sincerely look forward to your visit.
