Before You Begin

Complete the Intermediate Course First

The Advanced Course is the highest level of our curriculum. It assumes you have completed the Intermediate Course — and, before it, the Beginner Course. We work in classical technique from the very first lesson (fabric cutting, bases, multi-petal flowers, composition), so please make sure you have worked through the earlier courses before you begin.

01 — WHAT YOU'LL CREATE

What You'll Create

The Advanced Course is built around seasonal classical kanzashi, worked in fine habutae silk. The course runs in two seasonal collections — Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter — each comprising four classical pieces. Completing either one season earns you Gold rank and Advanced graduation — and makes you eligible for the Shihandai examination. Completing both seasons earns you Platinum — an optional path of deeper mastery, not a requirement for Shihandai.

Four classical pieces in the flowers of spring and summer, worked petal by petal in fine silk.

秋冬
Autumn / Winter — Four Classical Kanzashi

Four classical pieces in the flowers of autumn and winter — the season of Shichi-Go-San and the New Year.

Fine 6-monme habutae silk — the material of formal, heirloom-quality work — and the refinements that distinguish a master's hand.

02 — The Path to Shihandai

Your Path to Becoming
a Certified Instructor

Advanced is where the path to certification truly begins. Graduate from one Advanced season and you become eligible for the Oharibako Shihandai (Certified Deputy Instructor) examination. Pass it, and you earn a certificate issued directly by our Kyoto studio — recognition of your skill, and the authority to teach this living tradition to others.

1

Complete One Advanced Season — Gold

Four classical kanzashi — Spring/Summer or Autumn/Winter, whichever calls to you. One season is all it takes to become eligible; completing both seasons (Platinum) is an optional path of deeper mastery, not a prerequisite.

2

Take the Shihandai Examination

The certification examination of the Oharibako studio.

3

Receive Your Certification — Diamond = Shihandai

Issued directly from Oharibako, Kyoto — and your title of Shihandai.

Beyond Shihandai lies the higher rank of Shihan (Master Instructor), with its own course of study. Details will be announced as the program opens.
